Pier Square, Ardrishaig

The Story

Go-Wright Ltd was commissioned to lead the complete refurbishment and reconfiguration of a derelict, listed former boatyard at Pier Square. The goal was to breathe new life into this historic maritime structure, transforming it into a multipurpose community space featuring a café and retail facilities. This project required a delicate balance between preserving the building’s rugged coastal character and implementing the modern infrastructure necessary for a commercial public venue. 

Our Technical Approach

We executed a top-to-bottom restoration that addressed severe decay while significantly upgrading the building’s thermal and functional performance. Key works included: 

  • Building Envelope Restoration: A comprehensive overhaul of the existing slated roof and zinc flashings, alongside the renewal of the entire rainwater system to protect against the coastal climate. 
  • Specialist Timber Care: Extensive timber replacements and targeted rot treatments were carried out, supported by a new chemical injection damp course to stabilise the historic fabric. 
  • Heritage Joinery: We prioritised preservation by overhauling existing windows and doors where possible, while supplying and installing bespoke new sash and case windows to match the original profiles where they were beyond repair. 
  • Modern Internal Upgrades: To ensure visitor comfort, we increased overall building insulation and installed an efficient new electric space heating system, mechanical ventilation, and modern plumbing for high-specification toilets and shower rooms. 
  • Turnkey Finish: The project concluded with full internal decoration and the installation of durable floor coverings, preparing the space for immediate community use. 

The Result

The transformation of the Ardrishaig boatyard is a flagship example of how listed industrial buildings can be repurposed for the modern era. Go-Wright successfully delivered a high-quality, fully modernized facility that remains sympathetic to its heritage. The project has provided the local area with a high-performance community asset that preserves the spirit of Ardrishaig’s maritime history while serving its future needs.
