The Story

Go-Wright were selected in 2025 as the preferred contractor for the University of Strathclyde’s Maintenance Framework for the next four years. Barony Hall, a magnificent Category A listed building, required a highly sophisticated and sensitive restoration package. Acting under the framework, Go-Wright is executing a major fabric conservation project to halt environmental weathering, restore structural integrity, and refresh the building’s iconic red sandstone exterior. 

Our Technical Approach

This high-spec preservation project requires rigorous adherence to heritage standards and university-approved methodologies. Our scope includes: 

  • Facade Refurbishment: Utilising specialised DOFF steam cleaning alongside biocidal treatments to sensitively remove decades of urban pollutants and organic growth without damaging the delicate sandstone substrate. 
  • Specialist Mortar Repointing: Conducting comprehensive raking out and full repointing using a bespoke, Heritage Joint Review (HJR) University of Strathclyde approved lime mortar mix to ensure perfect aesthetic compatibility and breathability. 
  • Masonry & Joinery Restoration: Executing precise stone indentations using carefully colour-matched sandstone, running concurrently with traditional timber sash and case window repairs to preserve the building’s original profiles. 
  • Advanced Weatherproofing: Delivering specialist leadwork details combined with modern liquid plastic gutter protection systems to create a durable, seamless barrier against water ingress in high-risk roof drainage areas. 

The Result

While works are currently live, the phased completions demonstrate an exceptional standard of craftsmanship that honours the architectural legacy of Barony Hall. By combining traditional masonry skills with modern technical waterproofing under a secure, multi-year framework, Go-Wright is ensuring this landmark graduation and event space remains a pristine centrepiece of the university campus for generations to come.
