The Story

Located in the heart of Dowanhill, one of Glasgow’s most vibrant and desirable West End conservation areas, 38 Highburgh Road is an elegant, Category B listed red sandstone tenement building originally designed in 1901 by renowned architects Hugh & Barclay. To secure the long-term stability of this Edwardian landmark, Go-Wright was appointed as Main Contractor to deliver a highly complex package of structural repairs. Working across multiple floors within an entirely occupied residential building, the project demanded a delicate, highly technical balance of heavy structural intervention and surgical masonry and interior conservation.

Our Technical Approach

Getting deep into the bones of a historic, occupied structure requires seamless communication, rigid safety controls, and close engineering collaboration. Working alongside the specialist consultants at Narro, our scope includes:

Heavy Structural Intervention: Executing deep structural remediations across multiple storeys, carefully opening and reinforcing the building’s core framework as documented during the investigative phase.

Surgical Interior Conservation: Ensuring all heavy-duty structural works remain entirely sensitive to the building’s original Edwardian fabric, carefully protecting historic features including wood panelling and ornate plasterwork.

Heritage Fabric Protection: Carrying out precise interventions on the building’s iconic exterior red sandstone to repair weathering while maintaining architectural authenticity, supported by extensive external scaffolding.

Live-Environment Tenant Management: Managing the logistical challenge of working inside a fully occupied building, maintaining constant, clear communication with residents to ensure minimal disruption, dust containment, and absolute safety.
